Firstly, being an atheist does not require one to despise religion– organized or not.  There’s no reason whatsoever to waste time, energy or emotion on hating a man-made cultural phenomenon that’s been with us since the beginning of time.

Religious rites and practices of every denomination are nothing more than a psychological “story” or ritual narrative humankind has been revising and retelling for tens of thousands of years. It is responsible for the early forms of science, astronomy, history, cosmology and philosophy, if not the very origins of civilization and government itself. The way we tell ourselves stories and dreams may be essential to the evolution of our entire nervous system as well.

It is incumbent upon atheists to speak out,  but not to denounce, decry or destroy religion. That would be as senseless and destructive as trying to destroy ancient forms of literature or the Mayan Codex. Modern scientists, thinkers, philosophers and storytellers are learning and will continue to glean vital information about how, why and what makes humans believe the things they do by studying all forms of religion from the most primitive to the New Age. Learning about religion, mythology, psychology, evolution and neurology will be the lineaments of a future science yet to be defined.

The reason we speak out, aside from whatever legitimate grievances we might have, is not to persuade, convince or convert the religionist, the fanatical “true believer” or the blind follower, for that is an impossible, thankless and futile task. We speak out without fear of reprisal, because we have but one goal in mind, or as Lawrence Krauss reminds us:  As educators our duty is not just to educate, but to destroy ignorance.” We speak out relentlessly and indefatigably with one purpose in mind i.e.  to encourage others to do the same and no longer remain complicit with the ever encroaching regressive ignorance, prejudice and nescience that “believers” would impose upon us were we to remain as silent as we have in the past.

A Universe Struggling to Know Itself

I must say I hope the image of a failed divinity is forever expunged from human consciousness. No one died for your sins, you don’t have to suffer or die because of some primal progenitor’s divorce from their jealous and wrathful creator. You have only to live your life to its fullest capacity. As though every breath of every second was 15 billion years in the making. If you can do that human or divine you have come to the perfect achievement of a universe that through all of its turmoil and muck has struggled desperately to know itself.

My Dear Christian Brethren and Sistren

You are living in The Last Days of Pompeii, but that volcano looming above you

is not spewing lava, but information. Information that is immutable, unstoppable,

irrefutable and definitive. You have nowhere to flee, but to take shelter in the

unfortunate hollow of the past, the uninformed and the mislead. You did no

wrong, you are not to blame, you did your best to listen to your tribe, your family,

your community and your heart as best as you understood it.

But now the tides have turned against you. The Truth is before you in all of her shining

magnificent glory. There is no messiah, no Only Way, no hell, damnation or salvation. There is

no slaughtered son of a wrathful god, no eternal life, eternal sin or eternal suffering. You need not

pay for your primitive progenitors’ mistakes, deception, seduction or sin. There is no sin, except to

deny truth and perpetuate the lie. These are things of the past and of a great and profound

ignorance. It’s okay to let go of them. You will not perish, you will not suffer, you will not be judged,

but you will be free. Free, finally from the oppression and occupation of a debilitating ideation  that

never truly was, nor will it ever truly be.  Nevertheless, just as we know from 4 billion years of the sun

rising everyday, the one near eternal truth is that your cherished cynosure, like the ten thousand

before Him will evaporate and be relegated to the dung heap of history with every other god and

goddess of the past. For, you see, that volcano looming above you right now is neither death nor

destruction, but light, knowledge, truth, change, and a beacon for the future. You need not fear

any longer. It’s okay to breathe and let go.

This time the wave is understanding and knowledge.
